A 3-Day Road Trip Through Eastern Idaho to Yellowstone

Idaho serves as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park for travelers entering from Nevada and Utah. This three-day itinerary is designed as a relaxed, one-way road trip through southeastern and eastern Idaho, with short drive days and easy stops that enhance the journey. By the time you reach Yellowstone, you’ll arrive rested and ready for more.

Day 1: Arrive in Lava Hot Springs

For travelers crossing into Idaho at its southern border, Lava Hot Springs is an effortless first stop off Interstate 15. Arriving here immediately shifts the pace. Spend the afternoon soaking in the geothermal hot pools and strolling the compact downtown before settling in for dinner. This first day is intentionally light to help you unwind.

Where to Stay

  • Home Hotel puts you right in downtown Lava, close to the hot pools and river. It’s an easy, walkable home base when you want to park the car and wander around.
  • Greystone Manor is a B&B with a Victorian feel that’s great for when you want your first night to feel like more than just a stopover.

Where to Eat

  • Greystone Manor’s on-site restaurant offers an elevated dining experience for when you’d rather linger over a paced meal than hunt for a table. Reservations required.
  • Eruption Brewery & Bistro keeps things relaxed with wood-fired comfort food and a local-brew vibe. It’s an easy choice when you want good food without making the night a production.

Day 2: Lava Hot Springs to Idaho Falls

Drive time: ~1.25 hours | 90 miles

This is one of the easiest drive days of the trip, and you’ll arrive in Idaho Falls with plenty of time to settle in and explore the city. Amble along the River Walk, tour the Museum of Idaho or browse downtown shops before heading to dinner. If your schedule allows, Idaho Falls also works well as a two-night base, with worthwhile daytrips such as Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve or a laidback drive along the Teton Scenic Byway

Where to Stay

Hilton Garden Inn and Residence Inn by Marriott are comfortable, conveniently located options with access to the riverfront and downtown for leisurely strolls.

Where to Eat

  • Copper Rill is the pick for an elevated night out.
  • Smokin Fins is a lively alternative with delicious sushi and seafood dishes in a more casual setting.

Day 3: Idaho Falls to Island Park

Drive time: ~1.5 hours | 89 miles

The recommended drive from Idaho Falls to Island Park follows the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, a forested route shaped by volcanic geology, river canyons and two of eastern Idaho’s standout waterfalls. Short, well-marked walks lead to viewpoints at Upper and Lower Mesa Falls, as well as elevated overlooks. These stops fit naturally into the drive without detours or a significant time commitment.

Travelers with pre-booked Yellowstone lodging can continue directly to the west entrance, but those with extra time may want to spend the night in Island Park. Nearby Harriman State Park and Big Springs offer easy, low-effort ways to experience the area’s open landscapes and wildlife before turning in.

Where to Stay

  • SpringHill Suites by Marriott is a dependable option for an easy night and an early start, with breakfast available before heading into the park.
  • Island Park Lodge offers a simple, well-kept stay when you want a quiet night and a smooth morning departure.
